LG 55EM9700 55-Inch OLED Priced, Taking Orders

This is the most exciting news we have heard in a good six months, so we will cut straight to the chase! The 55-Inch OLED HDTV from LG, the LG 55EM9700 has now gone on sale in Korea, and will be shipping out next month!

This is huge news in the HDTV world and technology world as a whole. Both Samsung and LG announced hugely impressive, ultra thin OLED HDTV as CES 2012 in January last year, and promised availability later in the year. Both missed this date, but today, LG have become the first manufacturer to start taking orders, with a shipping date of the first week of February 2013.

Pricing of the LG 55EM9700 in Korea is 11 million won, which currently equates to just over $10,000 USD / £6,250. Official pricing and dates for the U.S and European markets have yet to be announced, but we can expect to know more in the next month or two, and I’m sure we’ll hear something from direct from LG at CES 2013 next month. Just last month we saw it pass through the FCC, so it’s release must be right around the corner.

LG UK say that the 55-Inch OLED, known as the LG 55EM970V in the U.K will be available in the first quarter of 2013.

At just 4mm thick the is incredibly thin. But OLED is more than just about thinness, the new technology offers improved image quality and contrast ratios than any other screen technology. Blacks are now true black, and with the WRGB four color pixel system, which uses a white sub-pixel delivers perfect color output. Image are also more vibrant, natural and are not effected by viewing angles.

The 55-Inch OLED LG 55EM9700 gained a lot of attention at CES 2012, earning “The Best of Show” award. We can’t wait to see the production model again in person at CES 2013!
