Dell U2913WM Ultra-Wide 21:9 Monitor

Every now and then we cover other media devices which aren’t HDTVs on this site, if we feel it is worth giving it attention.

As soon as we received the announcement email from Dell, we knew this as a computer monitor which we had to give some attention to! Yes it’s not an HDTV, but it does have enough home theater qualities to make it worthy.

The Dell UltraSharp U2913WM Ultra-Wide monitor, to use its full name, is special for one main reason, which is revealed in the name; it’s Ultra wide!

Monitors used to be 4:3, the old square ones, then we moved to 16:9, then some laptops and other monitors moved to 16:10. But now Dell have announced the U2913WM ultra-wide monitor with a 21:9 aspect ratio, which is the same aspect ratio as used in the cinema.

Both Philips and Vizio have HDTVs with an ultra wide 21:9 aspect ratio, but this is the first computer monitor we have covered.

The Dell U2913WM will enable you to play back original cinema formated Blu-ray content without black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. It also features HDMI input for connection from a blu-ray player or media center. But this has of course been designed mostly for use with a computer, and will probably be suited to a graphic designer or photographer, helped by the more natural aspect ratio. But even office workers will benefit from the extra screen space.

I currently use a dual screen setup, with two monitors side by side, and I love it. I much prefer working with two rather than one, but you can’t avoid the dead space between the two monitors. The Dell U2913WM ultrawide provides another option which is a lot more elegant than two monitors.

The included Display Manager function allows easy placement of windows on either side of the screen. But Windows 7 and above already includes this function.

The 29-inch monitor has a 2560 x 1080 pixel resolution, is LED backlit and has a IPS panel for excellent viewing angles. 1000:1 contrast ratio, 2 million to one dynamic contrast ratio, 8 ms response time, and a 300 cd/m2 brightness. It also has a 99 percent sRGB colour space.  Inputs include HDMI, DVI, USB, VGAm DisplayPort, and MiniDisplay port.

It’s currenty available from Dell UK for £509, and will be available in the U.S shortly.
