Formula 1 in 3D on Sky 3D

There has long been speculation about F1 being broadcast in 3D. Today Sky have announced another “world first” with live F1 coverage on Sky 3D of the third test at the Circuit de Catalunya.

We have had major sporting events broadcast in 3D before, such as the 2012 London Olympics and Wimbledon from BBC, but this is the first time that Formula 1 will be broadcast in 3D.

Sky 3D views can watch live in 3D during all four days of the event. This will also be sumulcast on Sky Sports F1.

Sky Sports F1® HD commentator Martin Brundle said: “This is a special moment for Formula 1 fans and exactly the kind of innovation and access that Sky Sports F1 promised. 3D will show us the real challenges of the race track with added depth and perspective. It will be a new, immersive experience for viewers and I can’t wait to see what F1 action in 3D will reveal.”

But don’t get too excited for the future, this is a one off event. While it does last four days (28 February – 3 March), after the Circuit de Catalunya in 3D race, that’s it, for now at least. But it is a great sign for the technology and shows the potential of things to come.

One thing I’m curious about is exactly what we’re going to see in 3D. I’m sure the cameras about the track will be in 3D, but I can’t help but thing just how amazing the car camera’s view would be in 3D, to see the drivers perspective in 3D would really take it to the next level. I guess we’ll have to tune in a see for ourselves.
