Flexible OLED TVs at CES 2014? [Confirmed]

We’re now just one month away from CES 2014, which kicks off in Vegas in early January. We of course will be there with our cameras rolling covering the event in detail.

We’re hearing exciting rumors that Samsung and also LG will be showing off a new form of TV technology with a remote controlled flexible OLED TV!

Last year both LG and Samsung wowed with world with their curved OLED TVs (video). Since then we have seen LG bring their 55-inch curved OLED TV to the market, with 77-inch 4K and larger sized models planned.

We also saw a number of companies show off small flexible OLED screens (see video here).

Right now manufacturers are stuck between making both traditional “flat” OLED TVs, and curved OLED TVs, but with a controllable flexible OLED TV you would appear to be able to have the best of both worlds. You can apparently controlled just how curved the screen is by adjusting it with remote control.

According to an article from Korea times, an industry official said “Samsung will unveil a prototype of the flexible OLED TV at next month’s CES”. “I don’t know yet whether the prototype will be displayed in a Samsung booth or only to major clients in closed meetings,”. He didn’t expand on it further apart from saying it will be “huge”. So we can only assume it will be bigger than last years 55-inch curved OLED model, and more along the size of their S9 series of 84-inch and bigger OLED TVs.

It will make use of a plastic based OLED display with a back panel which can change the shape of the display.

The basic concept of the remote-controlled flexible TV is that users can use a control to bend the screen, enabling viewers to get a better viewing angle. Existing OLED TVs are just curved, not flexible and the viewing angle is fixed.

Earlier in May, Samsung was granted a U.S patent for a flexible OLED TV.

LG is also mentioned, saying that they will also unveil a remote bendable OLED TV. This was apparently stated by an LG executive by telephone.

The flexible OLED TVs feature software than adjust the content and images, as to make sure it’s not distorted. The technology is apparently very much in prototype stage, but as we know from the LG curved OLED TV that we saw unveiled at CES 2013, it can quickly go from a “prototype” model to a fully blown production model within the year.

While this is still just a rumor, it sounds like a very feasible product. In fact, I feel I would be some what disappointed if we don’t see one next month!

Update: Samsung has just announced that this product is real! They have shown it off proudly on Stage at CES 2014 as the Samsung Bendable UHD TV! The bendable TV is 4K and can go from flat to curved in a press of a button. We can’t wait to check it out in person shortly!

Update 2 : LG have just announced their 77-inch flexible 4K OLED TV also! While it’s smaller, it makes use of OLED technology.
