According to Digitimes and industry sources, Philips is rumored to announce their first OLED HDTV at IFA 2012 in September in Berlin.
Apparently Philips are going to source their OLED panels from LG, who announced their 55-Inch OLED HDTV with much fanfare at the beginning of the year at CES 2012 in Vegas. LG’s OLED panels use white OLED pixels with separate color filters. This apparently reduces the manufacturing costs significantly, and hopefully also the end price, which has yet to be announced.
We don’t report on most rumors unless they have a solid backing, but we have always found Digitimes to be a very reliable source, so we are confident in this rumor.
While LG and Samsung are looking to release their OLED TVs this year, February 2012 looks to be the target launch window for Philips, but this is currently unconfirmed. We will hopefully learn much more at its announcement this September.
