Sony X8 55X850A, 65X850A Cheaper 4K TV

Sony have been very busy at IFA 2013 and have just announced the Sony X8 series of 4K Ultra HD TVs.

The X8 series is very similar the the X9 series which was announced earlier in the year at CES 2013, but the X8 have a lower price point, and do not feature the advanced “elephant ear” magnetic fluid speakers.

Sony is now leading the Ultra HD TV market with five 4K ultra HDTVs.

The Sony X8 55-inch XBR-55X850A ($3,499) and 65-inch XBR-65X850A ($4,499) will be available in stores “shortly”.

While they have lost the extra wide speakers, and enjoy a lower asking price, it looks like it hasn’t lost any other features, and of course has the 4K 3840 x 2160-pixel resolution.

They also feature Sony’s Triluminos expanded color system for richer and more natural colors, a slim bezel design, 4K X-Reality upconversion, active 3D, Smart TV platform and built in WiFi.

It’s also important to note that the X8 TV will support HDMI 2.0 ports (along with the X9 via a firmware update). Finally the X8’s also feature NFC one-touch, Miracast, and SideView.

We’re very glad to see that the rumors were true with respect to Sony releasing a new, cheaper Ultra HDTV range. We also suspect that as well as wanting to offer a cheaper price point on their 4K TVs, that a number of users were put off by the wider footprint / design of the X9 series, as a lot of home theater enthusiasts would already have, or would invest in their own separate sound system.

No word on release dates just yet, but we’re hearing it will be very soon.  Strangely enough, it’s looking like it’s a U.S only model right now, even though it was shown at a European event.
